4.6 Journalists and editors do not practise self-censorship in in the private broadcasting and print media.
Self-censorship is a common practice in the journalistic profession in Togo. Media
practitioners practice self-censorship because their awareness of the socio-political
context makes them fear reprisals, which are sometimes of a financial nature.
When you work in public print media, you cannot publish everything. Some
journalists also practice self-censorship for fear of getting into trouble. And they
decide not to publish the information. Even if they want to cover an activity, they
only publish those aspects which make the authorities look good. Others are very
aware that they are civil servants, who can therefore not write what they please.
A panel member observes that journalists have a social responsibility which does
not allow them to set the whole country ablaze just because of some information
they publish.
