SECTOR 4 Activities needed over the next few years • • • • • Get the Media Complaints Commission (MCC) up and running and embark on a public awareness campaign to promote the role of the MCC and the public’s use of the commission. Pressurise for a law reform commission – This requires a broad approach, calling for law reform in general rather than focussing on a particular sector. Campaign for the enactment of the Broadcasting Bill – This needs to be linked to the passage of the Communications Bill, and should aim to create greater awareness of the bills and their implications. Strengthen media organisations by encouraging journalists’ involvement in the development of their own profession and to get involved in the national debate on law reforms. Greater collaboration between media and training institutions. MISA, together with editors, should explore what specialised knowledge journalists need, and specific courses can best be delivered. There should be better monitoring and evaluation of training. The panel meeting took place at Orion Hotel, Pigg’s Peak, 8 to 10 July 2011.
