2.8 All media fairly represent the voices of society and
its minorities in its ethnic, linguistic, religious diversity.
Religious pluralism is not a major problem in Madagascar as far as the
treatment of information is concerned. For the most part, all religious groups
are represented in the media. However, one can admit to the fact that
Christianity is accorded a larger share by the media.
Certain age groups are less well represented, such as young people and
senior citizens. However, thanks to the “Vaovaomparitra”, with its regional
news content, minorities that have been hitherto excluded are reached.
Within the programming of TVM, the economics broadcast Topimaso, is
translated into sign language. If theoretically speaking, the media do not shut
the door to minorities, they also think in economic terms. Subjects dealing
with minority groups sell less, and are thus represented less in the
programming content. The media covers social issues when brought to light
by an involved and noisy civil society. The panel has found that the media
give more coverage to the élites, the upper classes of society, who are more
interested in politics, which is the favourite subject of the Malagasy media.
