SECTOR 2

Another factor that weakens the independence and viability of media houses
is the working conditions of media professionals. The work of a journalist is
not remunerated with a decent salary. Journalists however provide a public
service, since being informed is a fundamental right of a citizen. The
ratification of the Florence Convention has not had any meaningful impact on
the media sector, and yet many other sectors have frequently obtained
equipment for the production of audio-visual materials.
On the other hand, government efforts are being felt as far as public
procurements are concerned, which are awarded in a relatively equitable
manner to numerous newspapers.

The evaluation unit of the media sector, at the initiative of l’INCIPALS , has
demonstrated that women are represented at a mere 20% and men 80% of the
workforce in the media sector. However, it seems that efforts have been made
over the course of the past five years to render women more visible in the media
sector. For example, women are given far more interviews. However, they remain
small in number and are generally hesitant to present themselves in public.
