Citizens’ access to domestic and international
media sources is not restricted by state authorities.
It can be said in Benin that citizens’ access to the media is not restricted since
there are about 300 free radio and TV channels. It has to be noted though that
RFI was once taken of air in August 2010 to prevent the re-broadcasting of Juan
Gomez’s “current afairs” program which was to discuss the accusation that 50
parliamentarians had leveled against the Beninese Head of State.
Citizens were, however, able to follow the program this time by going to the RFI
website. here was a second incident when RFI’s signal was scrambled though it
was not a technical hitch from their end. Benin was the focus of discussion when
that happened. According to the panelists however, the main case of domestic
media being restricted is that of licenses no longer being issued for private TV
stations to extend their service up country. he pretext for this restriction is
that these stations are to be community TVs for which standards and ranges of
operation have already been determined.
