ANALYSIS: The two major dailies have regional editions with different deadlines and often different headlines – Mombasa, Western/Mount Kenya and Nairobi editions. The Kiswahili newspaper Taifa, targeting rural areas and with a circulation of 20.000 (8 readers per copy), is trying to expand but many people prefer to read English language newspapers. This makes it hard for Taifa to attract advertising. Earlier efforts by UNESCO and the government to set up rural papers did not succeed.
