4.10 Journalists and other media practitioners
are organised in trade unions and/or professional
associations, which effectively represent their
interests.
Owners of private radio and television stations have formed an association (Union
des Radios et Télévisions Libres de Guinée URTELGUI) and newspaper journalists
can join the Guinean Journalists Association (l’Association des Journalistes de
Guinée, AJG), OGUIDEM and AGUIPEL.
Public sector journalists belong to two formations: the RTG trade union and
the union of the Ministry of Communication, which is affiliated to the powerful
National Confederation of Guinean Workers (Confédération Nationale des
Travailleurs de Guinée, CNTG). So far, there is no trade union in the private sector.
Many of these associations are poorly run. The weak organisational capacity of
journalists associations has delayed the start of a newspaper store that the French
Cooperation Department offered to help set up in 2008.
