Adequate competition legislation/regulation
seeks to prevent media concentration and monopolies.
A panellist noted that in the Information and Broadcasting Policy (2003) that
is currently being reviewed, there is restriction of cross-ownership of media,
such that owners of more than two television stations have to list one in a stock
exchange for public ownership. One panellist suggested that it was dangerous to
have a concentration of media ownership in the hands of one individual because
they could control the flow of ideas. Cross-ownership of media in Tanzania has
been an issue that has sparked much public debate recently due to the interference
of owners in the editorial agenda and content.
