SECTOR 1

1.11 Civil society in general and media lobby groups
actively advance the cause of media freedom.
In general, civil society has not been very involved in actively defending press
freedom. he Centre for Public Integrity (Centro de Integridade Pública – CIP)
has been the only civil society organisation to publicly complain about abuse or
attempts to restrict press freedom. he incorrect perception that press freedom is
a right that only concerns journalists still exists in the country; in reality, however,
journalists are merely facilitators for all citizens’ enjoyment of the right to freedom
of expression. here have even been comments to the efect that there is “too
much” press freedom in Mozambique.
Recently, as a MISA Mozambique initiative, a civil society coalition called
the Civil Society Coalition for Rights of Access to Information (Coligação da
Sociedade Social pelo Direito de Acesso à Informação, DAI Coalition) was
formed to advocate for the people’s right to information. he irst objective of
the coalition is to strengthen lobbying and advocacy for approval of a Law on the
Right to Information.
Participants recommended that the various civil society organisations should
include the issue of access to public information as a strategic objective in all their
strategies and action plans. MISA Mozambique should collaborate with other
civil society organisations, mobilizing them to adhere to this strategy.
