Owners of established mainstream private
media do not interfere with editorial independence.
History shows that many of Mozambique’s private media platforms are created by
journalists themselves, who are thus also their managers. In this kind of situation,
it is diicult to speak of “interference” as the two functions are performed by the
same person.
However, in recent years, media companies with a clear distinction between the
owner of the company and the editor have appeared, as in the case of the STV
and TIM television stations. he strictly commercial nature of these television
stations has produced some “interference” by the owners. his is illustrated by their
constant presence in the respective news services as sources of information or as
newsmakers. his example is particularly strong in STV.
