4.1

The media practice high levels of professional
standards.

The media follow voluntary codes of professional standards
which are enforced by self-regulatory bodies.

Analysis
There is a code of professional standards for journalists that is unfortunately not well known and a self-regulatory body that does
not function satisfactorily. There are a lot of cases that illustrate
the misconduct of journalists and the media as regards the ethics
of the trade; particularly the lack of proper judgment between the
private and public lives of politicians and citizens. To offset these
shortcomings, media agencies managed by professionals are making
efforts to critically examine issues at the internal level and are trying to mentor young journalists.
