4.10 Journalists and other media practitioners
are organised in trade unions and/or professional
associations.
The Ivorian media landscape is dotted with a multitude of union and professional
organisations regrouping different categories of actors (employers, journalists,
technicians, etc...). A panel member explains this proliferation as “democracy and
its misfortunes”.
One of the oldest unions of journalists and undoubtedly the most renowned is
UNJCI (Nation Union of Journalists in Ivory Coast). The Union was established
in 1991 following the opening of the Ivorian media landscape. UNJCI is a main
contact of the public authorities and partners in the sector. Ivorian journalists owe
several achievements to UNJCI such as the Code of professional conduct adopted
in 1992, the creation of OLPED in 1995, the Maison de la Presse, the Noël X.
Ebony Award, the Journalists’ Solidarity fund project, the housing project, etc.
Over the past few years, the emergence of several union-related organisations
has been noted. In addition to SYNAPPCI (National Union of Private Media
Practitioners in Ivory Coast) created in 1999, several other company unions have
been set up within RTI and Fraternité Matin. There are consequently 3 local union
organisations within Fraternité Matin. The same applies to RTI. At least two new
union organisations were created between 2008 and 2009: UPMCI (Union of
Media Professionals in Ivory Coast) and OJPCI (Organisation of Professional
Journalists in Ivory Coast).
Employers’ associations have not been outdone either. Several organisations
of editing houses defend the interests of employers in negotiations with the
employees on the one hand and with the public authorities on the other hand.
