State of the media in Southern Africa - 2003 Conclusion 2003 was of great importance for the media in their relationship with several public institutions and society. An important leap was made in raising awareness of other issues of public interest other than the ones focusing on political and government leaders such as coverage on the impact and education against malaria and HIV/AIDS, land conflicts and the pre electoral campaign. The obstacles faced by the media are attributed to a fragile financial and technical situation within the respective media companies, which determines to what extent they are able to execute their public function. Another obstacle but also a challenge is, the need to invest in new information and communication technologies as well as the formation of professional associations of media practitioners.
