2.2 Citizens’ access to domestic and international media sources is not restricted by state authorities.
State authorities restrict citizens’ access to national and international media
directly or indirectly. As soon as Radio France Internationale, for example airs
information that upsets the government, the sound is cut.
National media was strictly forbidden to supply their international counterparts
with information during the 2011 presidential elections. One of the radio stations,
which transmits Voice of America, was suspended for having violated this ban.
The magazine Jeune Afrique, as well as its distributors also paid the price for
having published an interview with the President of the Republic. The magazine
was banned from being sold and distributed copies were recalled.
