SECTOR 2

2.8 All media fairly represent the voices of society and
its minorities in its ethnic, linguistic, religious diversity.
There are programmes for the ethnic minorities on national radio and television.
The grid of community radio programmes takes into account the concerns of the
linguistic minorities. 18 national languages are spoken on national radio.
With regard to religion, a panellist stressed that certain religions of the elite have
the lion’s share in the media, particularly Christianity, in country where 27% of
the population are Christian.
However, the traditional Voodoo religion is dominant. The Voodoo festival is
generously covered in the media, to the same degree as Catholic pilgrimages.
The same treatment is given to events related to the Muslim religion. To be noted
too are the denominational media, which include “Voix de l’Islam” (The Voice of
Islam) with its clearly stated editorial line and broadcasting only programmes on
Islam.
Debate on homosexuality does not take place in the media owing to homosexuals’
reticence to reveal their sexual identity in public.
