2.3 The editorial independence of print media published by a public authority is protected adequately
against undue political interference.
There is no law protecting the editorial independence of La Nation, the national
daily and ABP (Agence béninoise de presse). According to a participant, the
authorities do not appear to influence the editorial line directly; there could
possibly be “insidious” interference, he said, adding that the journalists of La
Nation are not state agents, even though the newspaper receives a subsidy of 37
million CFA francs per year (74,000 US dollars). The panel was unable to indicate
what percentage of the ORTB’s budget this would represent. The ABP does not
produce opinions; it is content with facts via dispatches and magazines.
