SECTOR 2 However, in reality, 13 private commercial radio stations are in operation at the present moment. Among the non-commercial radio stations, 31 are community stations. There are 5 local rural radio stations. Among the internationally renowned radio stations are Radio Nederland, whose office for Africa is based in Cotonou, Radio France Internationale (RFI), which is listened to in the capital on FM with relays to Abomey-Calavi (south) and Parakaou (north); the BBC, which broadcasts on FM and also has a correspondent in the country. In the rural areas, radio is the only medium accessible, as is confirmed in a study by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Analysis of Benin (INSAE), according to one of the panellists. Indeed, 54% of households have at least one radio in rural areas. National radio has the widest coverage with 77.4% of the national territory; it does not, unfortunately, cover the whole of the country.
