SECTOR 2

However, in reality, 13 private commercial radio stations are in operation at the
present moment. Among the non-commercial radio stations, 31 are community
stations. There are 5 local rural radio stations.
Among the internationally renowned radio stations are Radio Nederland, whose
office for Africa is based in Cotonou, Radio France Internationale (RFI), which is
listened to in the capital on FM with relays to Abomey-Calavi (south) and Parakaou
(north); the BBC, which broadcasts on FM and also has a correspondent in the
country. In the rural areas, radio is the only medium accessible, as is confirmed
in a study by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Analysis of Benin
(INSAE), according to one of the panellists. Indeed, 54% of households have
at least one radio in rural areas. National radio has the widest coverage with
77.4% of the national territory; it does not, unfortunately, cover the whole of
the country.
There are 5 private commercial television channels and three television channels
which use the MMDS bouquet. The television does not cover all the areas of the
country and its presence in the urban areas is only 23.8%.
