Reporting Elections, Safety and Security of Journalists

This seems to be a lot to master, and it probably is. But
journalists must have the humility to accept the need for
education and awareness.
An ignorant journalist who has a limited grasp of issues/
subjects/processes is not only susceptible to manipulation
by scheming spin doctors, but also risks losing credibility
and respect in the eyes of discerning readers.
The media must be accountable for journalism that is
committed to accuracy, balance and fairness. Whatever
the circumstances, citizens in any democracy are united by
three rights:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

The right of voters to make a fully informed choice.
The right of candidates to put their views across.
The right of the media to report and express its views
on matters of public interest.
Other good practices for the media include:
Regulatory authorities ensuring that media coverage
of elections meets legal requirements.
That media houses have a code of conduct to guide its
coverage of elections accurately and fairly.
That the media has access to public information on
parties and personalities contesting elections.
That the security of journalists and the media is
secured during elections.

This brings us to the issue of journalists during elections:
•
The lack of professionalism
•
The loss of mental balance
•
The use of intemperate language
