4.10 Journalists and other media practitioners
are organised in trade unions and/or professional
associations.
Professional associations of journalists do exist, grouping them together according
to the subject matter they cover (environment, music, etc.), the genre they work
in (political columnists, sports journalists, etc.) or the different types of media
(television, radio, print media).
There is no union despite attempts in this regard. Union membership seems to be
“discouraged” by employers in general. The election of employee representatives is
not appreciated in certain media outlets and media owners - directly or indirectly
- oppose the emergence of an organisation of professionals in the sector.
Journalists themselves seem to be virtually unable to visualise what a decent job
and proper working conditions in their profession would entail. And this despite
being the ones who report on such matters elsewhere in society! Unions that are
active in other sectors are constantly in contact with journalists but have never
managed to convince them to come together and form their own organisation.
