Government had been considering plans to equip the main towns in the various districts with satellite dishes to transmit broadcasting signals to the surrounding communities. But this project was not implemented. Although the major cities and large parts of the 119 districts are being reached by the public broadcasters’ signals, rural areas currently receive little or no coverage. The situation is particularly dire with regard to television. While the RNM signal can generally be picked up throughout the country, TVM is finding it very difficult to reach the more remote communities. There are also other technical constraints in these outlying areas, such as access to electricity.
