MOZAMBIQUE public interest is expanding throughout the media organizations. Individual scores: 4; 4; 3; 4; 4; 3; 3; 3; 4; 4 Average score: 3.6 4.4. Gender mainstreaming is promoted in terms of equal participation of both sexes in the production process. Analysis: This is an area where there is not enough progress and there is still gender imbalance. Some male journalists sometimes even tell their female colleagues that journalism is not for women. This causes women not to feel motivated to join the profession. Recently there was a public recruitment drive for Radio Mozambique journalists in the capital of Zambézia Province, Quelimane. All the fifteen applications belonged to men. Individual scores: 1; 1; 2; 2; 2; 1; 2; 2; 4; 2 Average score: 1.9 4.5. Gender mainstreaming is reflected in the editorial content. Analysis: There is a growing number of women that are sources of information at official level. However, it will be difficult to reflect gender equity in the news because the news does not depend from journalists but rather from the events. If the protagonists are men they will be there but if those protagonists are women, men will also be there; the Mozambican society is still mainly dominated by men in as far as decision making is concerned. There are potentially more men more news prone areas and what one is witnessing in the editorial content is not intentional. African Media Barometer - Mozambique 2007 23
