The standard of reporting follows the basic
principles of accuracy and fairness.
Some Cameroon journalists make remarkable efforts to report accurately and
fairly; but there is also plenty of sensationalism, careless reporting, bias, and
outright fabrication of facts. One panellist recounted how a reporter with one of
the country’s respected newspapers interviewed him via the internet, but decided
to set aside his remarks and published several lines of fabricated comments instead,
quoting him as the source. “Journalists write profiles of people they have never
met or interviewed, basing their work on rumours and guesswork,” a panellist
remarked.
