The paper is structured in five interconnected parts: Firstly, it introduces key concepts, principles and literature within the regional context;
secondly, it looks at key social media
statistics and data from the region;
thirdly, it focuses on specific country
case studies. It then addresses issues
of access, affordability and availability of social media and lastly,
proffers recommendations and gives
a conclusion.

Social networking sites, a subdomain of social media, have been
defined as a networked communication platform in which participants: have uniquely identifiable
profiles that consist of user-supplied
content, content provided by other
users, and/or system-provided data;
can publicly articulate connections
that can be viewed and traversed by
others; and can consume, produce,
and/or interact with streams of user-generated content provided by
their connections on the site27.
