Gabon has several minority groups, in this case marginalized ethnic groups such as the pygmies and the physically and mentally disabled. The society and the media largely ignore these groups. The strongest ethnic groups in terms of number, political and economic power dominate the media space. On the other hand, articles or broadcasts dedicated to the problems faced by marginal groups are rare. Most radio stations, especially those in rural areas, produce programs in local languages. The content is often varied and include news, general information, and announcements of public interest. French remains, despite this, the most used language in the media, particularly in major cities. Religion is very present in Gabonese audiovisual media. Some religious denominations, such as the Catholic Church, operate their own radios stations. Most of the channels and stations provide space to Muslim minorities on Fridays. Outside of Christianity and Islam, regarded as major religions, other religions are not found in the media. The media treats the latter as sects not deserving to be popularized. 84 AFRICAN MEDIA BAROMETER GABON 2016
