Panellist agreed that in general equal employment opportunities do exist for all within media houses although people with disabilities remain on the fringes and not many newsrooms employ them. “Gender, race and tribe are not issues in Tanzania.” Debates in the last few years on issues of equal opportunities within the media seem to have contributed towards some positive changes, with women heading media houses or working as managing editors of publications. Most media houses have now entrenched equal opportunity policies into their operations. A sector of society that continues to face extreme marginalisation, however is gays and lesbians, as homosexuality is a criminal offence under the Penal Code.
