4.4. Equal opportunities regardless of race or ethnicity,
social group, gender/sex, religion, disabilities and age
are promoted in media houses.
Equal opportunities are not yet promoted for people with disabilities given that
the struggle for the recognition of their rights mobilises few people. There are
some examples here and there but these do not really reflect willingness or a
policy of promoting people with disabilities. There is for instance a blind man
who works as a receptionist at a radio station and another one who volunteers
at a community radio station. In spite of this finding, a panellist would remark
that: “behind equal opportunities these isolated initiatives seem to be promoting,
hides the media’s main concern: marketing.”
With regards to recruitment, no particular discrimination occurs in the newsrooms;
it is competence that matters.
A decision was taken at some point to promote succession planning both through
a policy of staff rejuvenation and on the other hand a good geographic and
religious representation in the newsrooms.
