Namibia has two professional media organisations – the Editors Forum of Namibia (EFN) and MISA-Namibia. There is no trade union for media workers. Staff working for the state media tend to belong to the public service union, which covers the entire civil service and does not have a media focus. “If you have a complaint about your working conditions, there is nowhere you can go as a journalist.” The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) once had a Legal Defence Fund, but no longer has the funds to assist journalists to fight their cases in court. The fund was only used for media freedom cases and did not address labour issues.
