ANALYSIS: There exists no explicit regulation/legislation for the promotion of adequate competition in the media. Competition is driven by market forces and the private sector is not restricted in this regard. Indeed, the constitution encourages private sector participation in the media. Although there is plurality of media, the output is not as diverse as could have been expected. Partnerships and cross ownership in the broadcasting field in particular have become a challenge to diversity of media content, thus posing the question whether pluralism promotes diversity.
