The editorial independence of print media
published by a public authority is protected adequately
against undue political interference.
Horoya is a government daily and the Guinean Press Agency (Agence Guinéenne de
Presse, AGP) is also run by government. These media are under total state control
and publish mainly institutional and government information. Their journalists
are government employees, who owe allegiance to their employer. This determines
editorial policy and results in “remote-controlled” editorials.
However, according to some panelists these media organisations still retain
a measure of professional quality. A trend towards the assertion of freedom of
speech brought about by the current democratisation period was also noted.
