SECTOR 2 Mobile phone penetration has increased rapidly in recent years, while the uptake of internet enabled phones or ‘smart phones’ remains limited outside urban centres due to lack of access to electricity and the general disparity of distribution of wealth in Namibia. It is worthy to note, however, that the costs for mobile internet have decreased. Especially in rural areas access to the internet remains more difficult. “I paid N$50 (4USD) for 30 minutes of internet in Okongo,” (a village in the Northern part of Namibia), recalled a panellist.
