3.4 The state/public broadcaster is accountable to the
public through an independent board which is
representative of society at large and selected in an
independent, open and transparent manner.
There is only the state broadcaster, no public broadcaster, ‘which is not
accountable to the public, it is accountable to the government of the day. It does
not have an independent board, it does not have a board at all.’
As set out in the law (Communications Regulatory Authority Act of 2012),
Botswana only has state and commercial broadcasters. Over time, several
ministers have made public statements underlining the fact that the state
broadcaster is only accountable to the government.
