Confidential sources of information
protected by law and/or the courts.

The Media Council of Tanzania’s (MCT) Code of Ethics for Media Professionals,
which is endorsed by the media fraternity, requires all managers and editors to
protect sources of information obtained in confidence. However, this protection
does not appear to be guaranteed in national legislation. One panellist revealed
that two newspapers - Habari Leo (government owned) and Mwanahalisi (privately
owned) - once covered stories that almost landed them in trouble. He/she added
that had they been taken to court, the two papers would have been forced to reveal
the sources of their information. Another panellist stated that journalists too are
not protected by law if they are forced to disclose their sources of information.
