The state/public broadcaster is accountable to
the public through a board representative of society
at large and selected in an independent, open and
transparent manner.
The state-owned Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency is headed by a board
appointed by government on the recommendation of the minister of government
communications and approved by the Media Standing Committee of the House
of Peoples’ Representatives. Board members are supposed to come from different
sectors of society and include representatives of the Ethiopian Chamber of
Commerce, the School of Journalism of the University of Addis Ababa as well as
lawyers. The chairperson is always the minister of government communications to
whom the board is accountable.
With the board of the state broadcaster being selected by the executive in a process
which is neither independent, open or transparent, and accountable also to the
relevant ministry, none of the requirements of this indicator are being met.
