SECTOR 4

The media practise high levels of
professional standards.
4.1 The standard of reporting follows the basic principles of accuracy and fairness.
There is a mixture of some improvements and some regression. At times, maybe
for immediacy, and in the race to publish, without the necessary cross-checking
of information, without due verification, there is clear partiality in the content,
which increases the lack of objectivity. These situations have been more common
in journalism practices of whistleblowing or political matters.
Reagrding the poor levels of professionalism, it must be highlighted that there are
publications which seem to have institutionalized the violation of ethics. Many
times, one is left with the feeling that journalism has been trapped. In all of this,
editors do not seem to be rigorously fulfilling their roles.

4.2 The media follow voluntary codes of professional
standards, which are enforced by independent/ nonstatutory bodies that deal with complaints from the
public.
In Mozambique there is a Journalistic Code of Conduct, which was approved in 2012,
by the National Union of Journalists (SNJ), with a self-regulatory instrument. There is
also the Code of Conduct for Electoral Coverage, which was institutionalized, also
as a self-regulatory instrument, in 2008 by MISA-Moçambique and the SNJ.
