There are variety of television programmes available for audiences ranging from soap operas – mostly from Brazil and Mexico – documentaries, dramas, phone-in programmes, talk shows and religious programmes. The lack of diverse programming is caused by lack of capacity. Every year, Radio Lesotho invites government ministries to submit programmes which is possible, because almost every government department has an information section and some of them have recording studios where they can record programmes. Radio Lesotho requests a minimum of 26 to a maximum of 52 segments but many of the ministries are unable to provide these programmes, therefore Radio Lesotho ends up either repeating programmes or cancelling programmes. “So the impression is that there is no diverse programming, but it is also because they are not receiving enough content.” Radio and television are now linked so you can access television through radio and vice versa, but this service is only available from a certain time in the evening. 46 AFRICAN MEDIA BAROMETER LESOTHO 2012
