3.12 Community broadcasting enjoys special
promotion by the government given its potential to
broaden access by communities to the airwaves.
he speciic characteristic of community radio in Benin is that it draws 20% of
its revenue from advertising, and it is to be headed by a board of directors that
represent the community. his is seldom adhered to in practice and the landscape
is dotted with all manner of radios.
As a result of their closeness to the grass root population, the government supported
the community radios by distributing motors, generators and transmitters not
forgetting the assistance that is given to all the media in the country. In order to
promote community broadcasting, the annual fees for operating a radio station
have been reduced to 200,000 CFA.
ORTB also contributes by giving technical support and taking care of the salaries
of the directors of certain community radios such as that of Ouesse, Lola or
Tanguieta.
he most striking indicator on the promotion of community broadcasting in
Benin is illustrated by the rate of viability of community radios which is as high
as 100%. In reality, of the 50 community radios there was no record of any ever
having been shut down.
