SECTOR 3 An activity may be covered, but when the content does not suit the Government, nothing is broadcast. Worse, the CEO of the ORTB, although asked to participate, did not take part in the survey conducted in Benin as part of a study on the audiovisual media in Africa. The report was validated and officially launched, and the ORTB, although invited, also boycotted the covering of the event. This was probably due to the somewhat embarrassing content, explained a panellist. The ORTB is not properly financed. It produces its own resources from advertising, but the state contributes in the form of an annual subsidy; however the amount of the subsidy and the overall budget that it represents are unknown. A project is currently underway to cover the whole country, financed by the state to the tune of 20 billion CFA francs, which has improved the country’s coverage. 94 AFRICAN MEDIA BAROMETER BENIN 2014
