advertising, but they often run at a deficit and cannot pay a regular salary to their
journalists.
Religious media are able to subsist without any advertising contracts because they
receive support from their respective congregations. A similar situation obtains in
the case of political or politicised media outlets which receive financial support as
a result of their affiliation from influential politicians or philanthropists and from
economic operators. These monies are used to cover the cost of equipment and
salaries of journalists and employees, among other expenditures.
The law does not require media to disclose the source from which such funds may
be received nor their amount.
