Training opportunities for media practitioners are virtually non-existent and they
still have to form their own professional organisation or union.
The Malagasy media landscape has not changed much since the 2008 barometer.
If at all there has been further deterioration, given the uncertainties and insecurity
- in society as a whole and in the media environment in particular - brought about
by the violent political crisis. Shortly after the drafting of this media barometer,
a private media outlet was closed down by the transitional government, and
journalists were roughed up and imprisoned.
In summary, despite some very optimistic ratings in certain areas, panel members
were generally dissatisfied with the conditions under which journalism has been
practised in Madagascar over the past two years and the quality and professionalism
of media services.
