Beyond 2008
In future, the media support programme will concentrate its efforts on the sustainability of self-regulatory bodies,
as all the existing frameworks in the region, except South Africa, face sustainability challenges. This will help with,
not only the sustainability of existing institutions, but also their effectiveness and, consequently, governments may
no longer threaten to establish statutory bodies.
Improved coordination and monitoring of the implementation of mainstreaming in the organisation first and then
outside has been stepped up. Monitoring of the media’s coverage will improve with the envisaged training on raising alerts and monitoring from a gender perspective. More effort will also be put into improving working relations
with the media women’s associations, which have been largely absent in a number of the countries in the region.
