Owners of established mainstream private
media do not interfere with editorial independence.
Editorial lines are considered by owners as the given interest of the boss. In certain
media houses, there is no editorial line. Editorial policy varies depending on the
mood of the owner and on signed contracts. The media, in its vast majority, has
adopted a rationale for survival and this constitutes a real handicap for the editorial
independence of a newspaper. There is a tendency in Benin in any kind of business
to consider any structure to be the personal affair of the person-in-charge. The
media are no exception to this trend..
