SECTOR 1

1.10 Civil society in general and media lobby groups
actively advance the cause of media freedom.
Civil society organisations work with the media to promote media freedom.
Human rights defence groups habitually speak up against the arrest and
harassment of journalists.
Nonetheless, their engagement is weak because of poor solidarity between nonmedia and media groups. Rivalry and mutual suspicion between journalists of
the public and private sectors have also made it difficult for journalists to form
a common front to advance their own causes. Even though, journalists of the
private media are more disposed to take up the struggle for press freedom, their
voices are submerged by civil servants who have been posted in the private media
newsrooms of the private media, and who make up about 80 per cent of the
industry.
