SECTOR 4 in Angola. There are certain manifestations of racism (and even of hostility) on the part of some whites against blacks. There are also economic factors which shape the social segmentation of Angolan society. There are some women with high profile positions in the media, but the overwhelming majority of media leadership is male. It should be noted, however, that there are some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working in the field of gender equality that seek to address gender-related issues in media bodies. In general terms, it is fair to conclude that women are treated inappropriately both with respect to the sheer weight of their number as well the importance of their role in society. Particularly rural women are even more marginalised leaving them without any space in the media. This is aggravated by the fact that there is very little solidarity from women in privileged positions towards those who are less fortunate. There are some noticeable changes, such as the fact that 37 percent of the membership of the National Union of Angolan Workers (UNTA), the country’s main labour organisation, is women, but there is still a lot to be done. Participants noted that it should be the responsibility of the state to support an atmosphere that diminishes the potential for social conflict in the country. Some acts of self-censorship border on the banal. Contrary to popular belief, self-censorship is not practised in the public media only. There is self-censorship in the private sector as well. Very often this is not due to orders from above, but linked to profitable personal relations. “The problem is that we are all dependent in every sector” , the AFRICAN MEDIA BAROMETER ANGOLA 2010
