Cameroon has a large number of media lobby groups and professional associations. On World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2010, the Union of Cameroon Journalists (UCJ) protested in central Yaounde against the death of an untried journalist in jail, and called for the elimination of criminal libel, as well as the institution of an Access to Information Act. Several journalists’ trade unions also work to advance the cause of journalism professionals and often defend journalists in labour disputes. Journalists are grouped into many associations mostly defined by their beats. They include the Association of Economic Reporters, the Sports Reporters Association, Union of Health and Environmental Reporters, etc. However, the multiplicity of organisations and the absence of a solid umbrella body limit their effectiveness. Civil society organisations do not take up the cause of journalists as strongly as they could, partly because they do not fully understand what the needs of the media are.
