Panellists felt that in Cameroon, the protection of
sources is “given with one hand and taken (away)
with the other”. For example, Article 50.1 of the 1990
Social Communication law states that the protection
of sources is both “recognised and guaranteed”. But the
very next line of that law states that a judge can compel
a journalist to reveal his/her source during an in camera
session. “Each time a journalist comes before the police
or a court, one of the first things is to have him/her
reveal his/her source,” said one panellist.
