protected and promoted.
1.1
Freedom of expression, including freedom
of the media, is guaranteed in the constitution and
supported by other pieces of legislation.
The Constitution of the Republic of Cameroon guarantees a wide range of
freedoms, including freedom of expression and of the press. In the preamble of the
1996 Constitution it is stated that:
The freedom of communication, of expression, of the press, of assembly, of association, and
of trade unionism, as well as the right to strike shall be guaranteed under the conditions
fixed by law.
In December 1990, due to popular demand, the country passed what has often
been referred to as the “Liberty Laws”. Amongst these was a new law on Social
Communication, that lays down various conditions for the exercise of freedom
of expression and of the press as guaranteed by the Constitution. It states in two
separate articles, 6 and 36.1, that the operations of the print and audiovisual media
are free.
