Cameroon has blocked internet access in the restive Anglophone regions at least
twice since 2017. No official reason was given for the decision, however, rights
activists quickly pointed out that it was intended to crack down on the use of
social media to mobilise anti-government protests. The move sparked social media
campaigns with the hashtags #BringBackOurInternet and #KeepItOn. Activists
described the decision to shut down the internet as collective punishment for the
