Confidential sources of information
protected by law and/or the courts.

are

The protection of confidential sources is explicitly provided for by law in article
67 of the Press and Communication Code. It states that “journalists and
communication technicians cannot be compelled to reveal their sources”.
The code of ethics of Togolese journalists also obliges them not to reveal their
confidential sources, even if this could cost them imprisonment. Only the source
itself can free them from this obligation, as well as formal proof that they have
been manipulated by their source.
In practice, however, the police are said to be systematically calling in journalists
and demanding that they reveal their sources of information, sometimes under
duress.
