It states that “journalists and communication technicians cannot be compelled to reveal their sources”. The code of ethics of Togolese journalists also obliges them not to reveal their confidential sources, even if this could cost them imprisonment. Only the source itself can free them from this obligation, as well as formal proof that they have been manipulated by their source. In practice, however, the police are said to be systematically calling in journalists and demanding that they reveal their sources of information, sometimes under duress.
