ANALYSIS: In this area, there are no laws, but journalists are occasionally constrained through torture to reveal their sources of confidential information. Article 10, paragraph 1 of decree No.92/313/PM of 24 September 1992 in relation to the code of ethics for journalists in Cameroon states that a journalist has the right to refuse to reveal his sources of information. In 2001, the editor-in-chief of the French language newspaper “Mutation” was detained for days at the Police Headquarters in Yaounde because the paper had published a list of appointments within the police force. The intention was to force him to reveal his source but he did not. However, in another recent incident, a journalist who had received information considered sensitive from a gendarme officer revealed the identity of his source and the officer in question is still in prison today. On the whole, panellists agreed that although the protection of confidential sources of information is guaranteed by law, there is intimidation.
