Côte d’Ivoire ratified the majority of regional and international instruments, such as the African Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Pact and Treaty of the ECOWAS (1975) and the government does not interfere with their application. The country is also signatory to the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression of 2002, which mandates that all restrictions of freedom of expression have to be imposed by law, ought to serve a legitimate interest and have to be necessary in a democtratic society.
